Dental Fear and Anxiety Infographic

For many people, sitting in a dental chair is not a neutral experience. The sounds, the smells, the anticipation of discomfort, it all adds up, and for a significant portion of patients, that combination is enough to put off care indefinitely. A 2021 systematic review published in the Journal of Dentistry found the global prevalence of dental fear and anxiety in adults to be approximately 15 percent, with higher rates among women and younger adults. Dental anxiety is not a minor inconvenience. Left unaddressed, it keeps people away from the care they genuinely need.

That is where conscious sedation changes the picture entirely. At Brightworks Dentistry, our sedation dentistry options are designed to make dental treatment accessible for patients who struggle with anxiety, a strong gag reflex, sensitivity to pain, or the need for longer procedures. Dr. Preston Shurley brings Advanced General Dentistry Residency training and a background working with complex cases, giving our team the experience and judgment to match each patient to the right sedation approach.

What Conscious Sedation Means

Conscious sedation refers to a state of relaxation in which you remain awake and able to respond to verbal cues, but feel calm and largely unaware of what is happening around you. It is distinct from general anesthesia, which renders patients fully unconscious.

With conscious sedation, protective reflexes remain intact, you can breathe on your own, and communication with your dentist is still possible throughout treatment. For most patients, the experience feels like very little time has passed by the time the procedure is complete.

Sedation Options We Offer

We provide three forms of conscious sedation, each suited to different patient needs and treatment types. Here is how each one works.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide sedation, commonly known as laughing gas, is the lightest option we offer. It is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose and takes effect within minutes. Patients feel relaxed and at ease while remaining fully alert and cooperative. One of the biggest advantages of nitrous oxide is it clears your system quickly once the mask is removed, meaning most patients can drive themselves home. It is a great choice for mild to moderate anxiety or routine procedures where taking the edge off makes all the difference.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication, typically a benzodiazepine, before your appointment. By the time you arrive, the medication has already begun to take effect, and most patients feel drowsy and deeply relaxed throughout treatment. Many people have little to no memory of the procedure afterward, which is welcome news for those who find the sounds and sensations of dental work distressing. Because the effects linger, you will need someone to drive you home, and plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

IV Sedation

IV sedation delivers medication directly into the bloodstream, producing a deeper level of relaxation than either nitrous oxide or oral sedation. It takes effect almost immediately, and the depth can be carefully adjusted throughout the procedure. Patients are typically unresponsive to their surroundings and retain no memory of the appointment. IV sedation is well-suited for longer procedures, complex oral surgery, or patients with significant anxiety who have not found sufficient relief with lighter options. Like oral sedation, you will need a driver for this option.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Conscious sedation is appropriate for a wide range of patients. It is commonly used for those with dental phobias or high anxiety, patients with a strong gag reflex, individuals who have difficulty getting numb from local anesthetic alone, those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures, and patients with certain physical or cognitive conditions that make it difficult to remain still.

During your consultation, we evaluate your health history, current medications, and treatment needs to determine which option is the safest and most effective fit for you.
