As a comprehensively trained dentist with advanced surgical and restorative experience gained through a rigorous United States Air Force residency, Dr. Shurley brings a unique combination of military-grade clinical training and fine arts background to Brightworks Dentistry in Dunwoody, Georgia—the same community where he was raised.
Education and Military Training
Dr. Shurley earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where he graduated in the top of his class. He also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, graduating Magna Cum Laude. During his final year of dental school, Dr. Shurley was selected as one of only six Diamond Scholars—a rigorous program allowing students to complete the Advanced General Dentistry (AEGD) residency curriculum alongside their senior-year studies.
Following dental school, Dr. Shurley commissioned into the United States Air Force and completed his Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada—where he was named Top Resident. During this intensive year, he trained extensively in surgical procedures, dental implants, complex rehabilitation, conscious sedation, and the management of orofacial pain. Dr. Shurley continues to serve as a Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, providing dental care to active-duty service members and veterans.

Advanced Training and Clinical Expertise
Dr. Shurley continues to pursue advanced education to offer patients the most current treatment options. He completed the Neodent Full-Arch Implant Immersion program at ILAPEO in Curitiba, Brazil, and has trained with the White Cap Implant Institute. He holds Qualified Dentist designation through the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, is Invisalign certified, and participates in the Spear Study Club. Dr. Shurley utilizes CBCT imaging for advanced diagnostics and treatment planning, provides CEREC same-day restorations, and employs modern digital workflows including iTero scanning and Sprintray technology.
Where Art Meets Dentistry
Before pursuing dentistry, Dr. Shurley worked as a professional artist, and he continues to create and exhibit work today. He has shown artwork and created public murals across four continents and remains an active painter, jeweler, and woodworker. This lifelong commitment to visual arts brings a unique perspective to his restorative and cosmetic dentistry—allowing him to create dental restorations that are not only functional and comfortable but also aesthetically balanced and naturally beautiful.

Returning Home to Dunwoody
Raised in Dunwoody, Dr. Shurley is proud to practice in his hometown community. After serving at military installations across the country, he is excited to be back in the Atlanta area with his wife Christine, their two young children, and their dog Bert. When not in the office, Dr. Shurley enjoys traveling, volunteering, playing golf, and continuing his work as a visual artist.
